Now just over a week into the retreat my eldest seems to be coming into his own. No... with one exception yesterday he has not contacted us at all. The program has kept him very busy. Yesterday's brief email was a simple request for a dress-up checklist used in his writing curriculum so that he could polish the project he was working on.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we had a discussion about writing skills and essays where he told me that he thought that he only needed to know how to write essays for school and would not use the skill again. I asked him what he thought a sermon was ~ a thesis, supported arguemnts and a conclusion. This made him pause. Then I asked him what you would do in a business situation if you wanted you boss to invest in a specific program or piece of equipment. Hmm... I asked what skills he thought I might be using to help write the grant application to help out church get federal support to improve accessibility at church. He hadn't thought about writing skills in those ways before.
Perhaps he is discovering that there is more value to the ability to write well than he first thought.
I am looking forward to seeing what other insights he has gained while away.
