We found the program to provide support. Now we need to makes sure that our sons have the skills needed for the program. We have been working towards self guided care but it is time to ramp it up.
Not only do the boys need to speak up about the assistance they need. They have to be able to guide the staff doing the job. They need to prepare job descriptions and do interviews to hire staff. The need a business number and an understanding of book keeping in order to do thier payroll (including deductions for CPP, EI, Income Tax and WSIB). They will have to broaden their knowledge of community resources. They must discern how many hours of attendent care they will need over the course of a year. They will have to balance direct and indirect supports within their budget. They must self administer their funds without any family help. They must comply with labour standards and human rights codes. They must have an understanding of occupational health and safety standards, workplace safety and insurance requirements. They must meet with the selection committe to show that they will be capable of managing.
My sons will have to be able to prove that they have developed all of the above skills in order to get the support they will need to attend a post secondary program. Their peers on the other hand are doing will if they have had part time employment and got accepted into a post secondary program.
Our lifeskills inventory will become a much greater priority in the coming months. I hope that I am up to the challenge.
