Making Time to Remember

Thursdays are always a busy day at our house.  The oldest has his vocal music lesson in the morning and the youngest is off to the local university each afternoon for math enrichment.  Both programs will still be happening today but the times have been adjusted to make sure that we have time for Remembrance services.

The boys are blessed to know some veterans from our church community.  One of the veterans who recently celebrated his 85th birthday traveled to Holland with his family in May for a liberation celebration and has shared a number of his stories with us.  His stories don't glorify the war but make it real.  His collection of model planes include all the planes that his father flew in in the First World War and all the planes that he flew in  the Second World War.

I can't imagine the worry and fear of mothers who have seen their sons go off into service.  My sons aren't much younger than many of those who made sacrifices for us.  Last year we went to the Warplane Heritage Museum and learned a great deal about the struggles and challenges these young men faced.

Wearing a poppy and saying thank you just doesn't feel like an adequate response for all that was sacrificed for our future.
