Candidates

For about the past week, Andrew and I have been researching the candidates in Guelph's current municipal election. We started out by looking at the three different positions that people are running for. The positions are mayor, city council and school board trustees. Each person can vote for one candidate for mayor, two candidates for city council and 2 for school board trustees.

There are four candidates for mayor. They are the current mayor, Karen J. Farbridge, a past city councillor, David C. Birtwistle, Ray H. Mitchell, and Scott L. Nightingale. With a bit more experience, I think that Scott Nightingale would be good for the job. He is very involved in his community and seems like a nice person. I don't really like how industry and big business focused David Birtwistle seems to be. Farbridge is my favourite candidate, because of her experience. Ray Mitchell has never had any prior involvement in politics.

Five people are running for city council in our ward. The candidates are Mike Salisbury, Gloria Kovach, Steven P. Petric, Cam G. Guthrie, and Christina Boumis. Mike Salisbury, and Gloria Kovach are our current city council members.
Mike Salisbury has been a city council member for a while now. He's helped me with my park clean-ups, and has shown that he cares about both businesses and the environment.
Cam Guthrie has a lot of experience, and last year, he won a "40 Under 40 Award".
Christina Boumis doesn't seem to have any previous experience in politics. On her website, she points out a lot of problems, and says we need to do something, even though things are already being done about them. She also, doesn't say what she could do to help solve the problems.
Gloria Kovach has a great deal more experience most of the other candidates.

The trustee candidates are Jennifer Waterston, Susan Moziar, and Don Griffin. I like Don Griffin's platform, of making all kids able to learn to the best of their abilities. One of the things that he talks about on his website, was how he left school five hours into kindergarten because he thought it was a waste of time. Eventually, he did go back to complete high school.
Susan Moziar has a good deal of experience with kids, and with schooling.
Jennifer Waterston has been a trustee for twenty years. Her platform is to increase the involvement of parents and students' achievements.

If I was able to, for mayor, I would vote for Karen Farbridge, for city council I would vote for Mike Salisbury and Cam Guthrie. Don Griffin and Jennifer Waterston.

2010 election

We have been following the municipal election this year. As part of Civics, we have been looking at each of the candidates and deciding who we would vote for if we were able to. I decided that I would vote for Karen Farbridge as mayor. I think that she has done a good job as mayor over the past 4 years. While she is working to help the economy, she has still had the environment in mind. I don’t think that Ray Mitchell has had any experience with politics. David Birtwistle’s main objective seems to be the economy. From what I’ve read, he doesn’t care much about the environment. It also seems like he’s taken a leaf out of Harper’s book, by slamming the previous City Council. Scott Nightingale is highly involved in the community. Our family has agreed that he could make a good mayor, but he needs a little more experience. If I could vote for our city councilors, I would vote for Mike Salisbury and Cam Guthrie. Mike Salisbury has been highly involved in the community and has always taken the time to help our neighbourhood. I think that Cam Guthrie would do a good job. He seems to be very people oriented. He has encouraged people to give their input so that he can better represent our ward. I don't know who I would vote for as our Trustees. I did not see much difference between them. I guess I would vote for the ones that made it in before, they would have the experience.

  1. Steven P Petric has much experience within the community and I think he is being over looked because he decided not to put signs out. I think you should look at his twitter, website and facebook.
